Future Use & Harbour Museum
On 12 November 2015, the Budget Committee of the Bundestag decided to make available a grant of EUR 120 million for the development of the Deutsches Hafenmuseum in Hamburg.
Up to EUR 26 million was allocated to the transport and restoration of PEKING.
The Hamburg Maritim Foundation, whose mission is to preserve historical ships for the public, agreed to receive PEKING from New York's South Street Seaport Museum for her restoration.
The ship was restored to its original condition of the late 1920s. Although return to sailing the deep sea is not anticipated, it is hoped to present her at parades on the Elbe river under sail assisted by a tug.
When the new German Harbour Museum is completed, PEKING will be an important part of the presentation of world trade of the early 20th century and the art of shipbuilding at her time.
In august 2020, PEKING returned to her home port - traditionally towed by a tugboat.
